Biz’s Journey Home

Timeless Classic *****
Adults capturing the attention of any middle schooler is a feat, but enthralling them is the work of a magician! The magic of this young adult novel is that it speaks to the reader because the writer “gets” the reader and her/his world, tapping into fears, sadness, fears, dreams…friendship, family, love, and loss. With a freshness of its own, Biz’s Journey Home harkens back to the classics of yesteryear- Black Beauty, National Velvet, Old Yeller, and tells stories within the story. Biz’s Journey Home is sure to be added to the updated bookshelf labeled “Classics.”

Like Old Yeller, it’s a story
I will remember. *****
Biz’s Journey Home pulled on my heartstrings. The author created a fun dynamic between the horses in which they conducted themselves like a bunch of teenagers! I had so much fun reading about their various personalities, quirks, and insecurities, as well as how they came through for one another. Every interaction with the horses left me wanting more. Jean’s writing is warm and relatable. She also weaves in information about proper horse care that both informs and entertains. She addresses tough topics such as tragedy, death, grief, and loss through a spiritual lens, encouraging readers to see the silver lining - the beauty that sometimes reveals itself in unique ways when navigating grief. This book brings tough feelings and circumstances to the surface to be felt, nurtured, and healed. Like Old Yeller, it’s a story I will remember.

Because of Biz

It Will Keep You Captivated *****
Biz’s legacy continues! In this novel of growth and change, mother, daughter, and horse learn to open their hearts to new, and sometimes scary, experiences. We often think of bravery as occurring in big dramatic acts, but sometimes, it’s as simple as reaching past our own self-imposed boundaries. Rich in emotion and challenges, Because Of Biz will hold you captivated as you walk alongside Carol, Jill, and Abdul (yes, even the horse!).

Layered with the Complexities
of Life and Loss *****

Because of Biz
follows the poignant Biz’s Journey Home, bringing closure in the midst of sorrow, and humanity in the face of difficult challenges. MacDougall-Tattan writes with a deep knowledge of horses and humans and how those worlds intersect. A young girl grows up, a single mother finds her purpose, and the horses and people in their lives find connection and even second chances. The writing is rich, layered with the complexities of life and loss, but also renewal, love, and hope.

Horseback Lessons *****
What a trail ride! Because of Biz is a wonderful sequel, chockfull of heartening storylines that navigate love and loss, life and death; growth, holding on, and letting go. Our guide is gentle, no harsh horse-whipping as we canter along the trail that weaves practicality in with spirituality. MacDougall-Tattan's themes emerge through her plot and characters, revealing many universalities of life, behavior, and motivations, and I'm talking about both humans and horses. It's a bit hard to say goodbye to characters whom I've come to know and care about. And again, I'm talking about both the humans and horses. I picture myself in the barn, now dusk. As I complete my final brush-down using the soft comb, I bid a fond farewell to the gang. It was quite a rewarding ride.
